I have a confession. Up until recently, I have not been big on green smoothies. I rarely consumed them and always opted towards chocolate or berry smoothies instead (but mostly chocolate!). When I developed a bit of a mango allergy, I stopped drinking green smoothies altogether – because in my mind, the only good green smoothie was one with a tropical vibe and LOTS of mango.
Fast forward to the present day, and my much loved and almost daily consumption of my favourite chocolate smoothie has met it’s match. Enter The Ultra Green. It’s a super alkalising green smoothie that is absolutely bursting with nutrients, keeps me satisfied till late morning, and most importantly, tastes great! It has an array of phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and is bulked up with carbohydrates, protein, fibre and a small amount of healthy plant fats. One of the champion ingredients in this smoothie is spirulina, which is basically a dried algae powder that is very dark green in colour. I don’t recommend sniffing a jar of it because it doesn’t smell too fantastic. But I do recommend regularly adding it to your smoothies, because this magical powder is incredibly high in protein, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, omegas 3 and 6 (both ALA and DHA) and trace minerals that the body requires. It also claims to be a source of vitamin B12! Spirulina has been around for a long time – even my Mum used to drink it when she was younger! So it’s nothing new; but it is amazing stuff and I cannot praise it enough. Because I live in a warm climate, I keep my jar in the fridge. I like this brand:
You can source spirulina from most health food stores, or online!
The Ultra Green Smoothie
- 2-3 large frozen bananas
- 1 cupful of frozen blueberries
- 3 large handfuls of fresh dark leafy greens (baby spinach, English spinach, kale etc)
- 10-15 fresh peppermint leaves
- 1 medium sized cucumber, with peel
- Juice of two oranges OR 2-4 pitted medjool dates, to sweeten
- Juice of one lemon
- 2 tbsp of cacao nibs
- 1-2 tbsp of hemp seeds
- 1-2 tsp of spirulina (I use 2, but if you’re not used to the taste of spirulina start with 1 and work your way up)
- 2 tsp of maca powder
- A splash of both water and your choice of plant milk
- Squeeze the citrus juice into the blender
- Add the rest of your ingredients
- Blend until smooth!
This smoothie is delicious and has quickly become my favourite smoothie ever – and if you guys knew how much I loved my cacao-packed chocolate smoothies, you’d know how bold of a statement this is! The freshly-squeezed orange juice, bananas and blueberries gives it a yummy sweetness that will satisfy your sweet tooth whilst still getting your green fix, which is the aim.
